DEAN RUSSO

My work is a balance of structure and abstraction. For me music and fine art should have the same qualities. A familiar melody with an added sense of chance.
I begin each piece with an accurate underdrawing, this basis of structure gives the work a heartbeat. I then overlay colour and symbols as an improvisational rift to tell the story of the subject.
Experimentation plays a large role in my work, as I find myself always learning and re-evaluation as I go. Those re-evaluations will find their way into my next piece. Pablo Picasso said “Colours like features, follow the changes of the emotions. ”The vibrancy of my palette speaks directly to my observation of the subject.
I am compelled to create work that evokes positivity and happiness and I find that these feelings are best achieved when a balance exists between realism and freedom.
